CUNIMA MCU is not only specialized on broadcasting conditions. It also provides a wide range of features that are interesting for the production of feature films like its Full-HD native progressive signal. The fact that it resists to extreme conditions and has very little needs makes it a really flexible tool.

High flexibility

Together with the German Fraunhofer Institut for Integrated Circuits, WIGE made it possible to combine an Altasens 4562 2/3 inch sensor with an extreme small unit (34 x 34 x 111.5 mm). This kind of sensor is the same that is used in the Si2K-camera that was utilized e.g. in the award winning film “Slumdog Millionaire”. Thanks to its low energy consumption of 5W it allows a smaller battery as well. This fact makes a flexible location of the camera possible, e.g. as onboard cam on fast vehicles, on light flying objects or wireless steady cam arrangements. In addition, the C-mount not only handles very small lenses, but can also work with typical film lenses with the help of a PL- and B4-mount adapter. And if the flange back happens to be imprecise, an adjustable back focus offers the possibility to compensate it. CUNIMA does not need an external control unit so that it represents a fully fledged system with a weight as low as 200g.

Stereoscopic 3D

As the first hype of 3D cinema trickles into a nearly stable market, it is very important to provide high quality content and keep up a clear added value for the audience. Furthermore the additional costs of a three dimensional film production need to be optimized and regulated to a profitable amount. Its Inter Camera Control feature makes external sync dispensable and hence reinforces effective fast workflows. WIGE Media AG has build on this potential market for years and offers a needed camera system with CUNIMA: Size, quality and flexibility are advantageous for very small rigs, e.g. on steady cams and cranes. On top of that, both cameras can be set closely enough so that you don’t need a mirror rig and avoid inconveniences that go hand in hand with it (light loss, distortion, reflection, etc.).

Raw Format

CUNIMA produces a native 1080i/p HDSDI signal that is supported by every existing scanning format. For example, its RAW format will work with several recorders like 1 Beyond, Megacine and Cineflow by the end of april 2011 including the debayering process to produce 4:4:4 uncompressed data with very high dynamic range. The outcome is a high quality image that can keep up with any professional standard camera.

Extreme resistant

Films with a lot of action parts need robust equipment to allow breath taking perspectives on high class stunts. This camera system is not only really small and handy; it already survived car crashes without any damage. The robustness of CUNIMA is also an important fact to ensure high quality 3D, as a synchronized stereo camera unit is very sensitive to incidents due to weather conditions and vibrations. Hence, CUNIMA provides exclusive perspectives for a demanding audience.
